Introduction
The Doctoral School of Economic and Regional Sciences (GRDI) has decided to establish its own Research Ethics Committee. The purpose of the Committee is to examine the ethical aspects of the research conducted by PhD students of the MATE GRDI and to issue decisions on submitted applications. Ethical review requests may be submitted to the GRDI Research Ethics Committee in both Hungarian and English by doctoral students and their supervisors of the doctoral school, as well as by staff members of MATE AGI and VFGI.
The mission of the Research Ethics Committee is to ensure that all scholarly work carried out within the GRDI complies with applicable ethical standards. The Committee is firmly committed to evaluating every submitted research proposal through a thorough, professional, and impartial review process. Its activities are guided by the strictest principles of national and international ethical regulations, as well as established standards of good scientific practice.
In the course of its work, the Committee subjects research plans to a comprehensive, multi-criteria assessment, with particular attention to the protection of research participants, data security, methodological soundness, and the proportionality of potential risks. Decision-making takes place within a collective, documented, and transparent framework, thereby ensuring both professional rigor and institutional impartiality.
Beyond its supervisory role, the Committee also aims to serve as a supportive partner to researchers by providing guidance on the interpretation of ethical requirements, assisting responsible research design, and contributing to the achievement of the highest possible scientific and ethical standards in research outcomes.

Process and Transparency
The preliminary formal review of submitted applications is carried out by the Secretary of the Committee. If the documentation meets the formal requirements, the Secretary forwards it to the Chair of the Committee. An expert appointed by the Chair subsequently conducts a detailed professional assessment of the application.
Decisions on applications are made by the Committee within a collegial framework through majority voting. In the event of a tie, the Chair holds the deciding vote. If any member of the Committee, including the Chair, is personally involved in a given application, they are excluded from the review process and voting. Where the Chair is conflicted, the Committee elects an acting Chair for the duration of the procedure prior to the vote.
In the course of its review, the Committee may adopt one of the following decisions:
– it establishes a lack of jurisdiction;
– it approves or rejects the application;
– it determines that the proposed research does not require ethical approval.
