The Doctoral School of Economics and Regional Sciences is the successor of the Agricultural Economics and Management doctoral programme accredited in 1993 in the predecessor of Szent István University (Gödöllő University of Agricultural Sciences), which has been operating in its current form since the summer of 2023.
The Doctoral School was formed by the merger of the Gödöllő-based Doctoral School of Economic and Regional Sciences (which was established in 2020 by the merger of the Doctoral School of Economic and Management and the Enyedi György Doctoral School of Regional Sciences) and the Kaposvár-based Doctoral School of Economics and Management. It was founded by internationally renowned academics and researchers, and has been characterised by openness and a combination of science and practice since its inception.
In keeping with its name, the Doctoral School of Economics and Regional Sciences offers PhD courses in the social sciences in the disciplines of economics, management and regional studies, but also in agricultural economics.
The doctoral school runs two doctoral programmes:
Regional Economic Development and Management
Sustainable Business and Management
The specificity of the doctoral school is that it is a two-disciplinary institution and that it operates in two geographical locations (Gödöllő, Kaposvár), thus enabling doctoral students to study in the most logistically and content-wise appropriate place for their life situation and research direction.
The Doctoral School of Economics and Regional Sciences is the largest doctoral school at MATE, with currently more than 200 doctoral students, including several foreign ones, participating in the training, which is conducted in Hungarian and English, with state and self financed forms.
The students of the Doctoral School come from all over the world to study research topics such as Environmental Economics, Natural Resource Economics, Marketing, Production and Supply Management, Business Economics and Policy, Business Finance, Management and Organisation, Economic Operations Research and Decision Theory, Statistics and Econometrics, Globalisation and international regional studies, Sectoral economics (agriculture, food industry, food trade, tourism), Regional and urban economics, Economic and social processes of regional and urban development, Regional and rural development policy, planning and governance, Macroeconomics of the food economy, Business management, Regional statistics and analytical methods.
In principle, the best teachers and researchers from the MATE Institutes of Agricultural and Food Economics and Rural Development and Sustainable Economy constitute the human resource base for the training of young scientists at the doctoral school , but also other universities, including foreign ones, are involved in the training and degree process. Guest lecturers are regularly invited from renowned national and international experts in management and organisation.
