The Festetics Doctoral School (FDI) is an interdisciplinary doctoral school that trains PhD students in three different disciplines: animal breeding, horticulture and plant production and environmental sciences. The educational and research program of FDI consists of over a dozen subprograms (research topics) that could differ substantially. Student can apply to these subprograms individually or by combining them and thereby covering two different areas of research under the direction of two Supervisors.
Animal breeding pays special attention to those areas of animal breeding and nutrition that make environmentally friendly, sustainable animal production possible. The development of these areas is our urgent task, as most intensive animal production systems exert substantial burden on their environment. For this reason, we prefer to focus those areas of animal genetics, physiology and nutrition that educate students about sustainable animal production.
The aim of horticulture and plant production is to show the students the latest scientific results of the cutting edge. In parallel, we teach them how to perform basic and applied studies in these areas and provide them useful information that allows them to perform research independently and apply their knowledge in practical areas. Although our research programs can function independently, we thrive to create synergies among them by pursuing interactive, cross-disciplinary projects.
In the area of environmental sciences, we have opportunities to study the elements of our living and lifeless environment that are connected to all three research areas. As living organisms are inextricably connected to their environment, the direct connection of the three main research areas of FDI cannot be questioned even at the level of education.
