Introduction

Last modified: 12. November 2025

As the name implies, the Doctoral School of Economic and Regional Sciences offers PhD programs in the fields of social sciences, management and business administration, and regional sciences. Starting in 2025, the doctoral school offers a DBA program as well, as part of its business administration doctoral training.

The doctoral school operates three doctoral programs:

  • Regional Economic Development and Management Program
  • Sustainable Business and Management Program
  • Doctor of Business Administration Program

The Doctoral School of Economic and Regional Sciences focuses its education and research on the economic, environmental, regional, human, and business factors of global, regional, and territorial processes through a theoretical and methodological approach to social sciences, more specifically to management and business administration, as well as to regional sciences.

The doctoral school operates on two campuses (Szent István Campus (Gödöllő) and Kaposvár Campus), thus providing doctoral students the opportunity to study at a location that best suits their circumstances and academic work.

The Doctoral School of Economic and Regional Sciences is a doctoral school within MATE University with the largest number of students. Currently, more than 250 doctoral students – including many foreign students – are participating in the doctoral program, which is conducted in Hungarian and English languages, and can be completed with state scholarships or through self-financing.

Students at the Doctoral School come from all over the world to pursue research topics such as:

  • Environmental economics, natural resource economics,
  • Marketing,
  • Production and supply management,
  • Business economics and business policy,
  • Business finance,
  • Management and business administration,
  • Economic operations research and decision theory,

  • Regional and urban economics,
  • Economic and social processes of regional and urban development,
  • Regional and rural development policy, planning and governance,
  • Macroeconomics of the food economy,

Basically, the most outstanding lecturers and researchers at MATE institutes – as part of the Institute of Agricultural and Food Economics, and the Institute of Rural Development and Sustainable Economy – serve as a base for human resource that ensures the training of new scientific experts at doctoral school, although other universities, including foreign institutions, participate in the training and degree acquisition process as well. Renowned Hungarian and foreign representatives of various scientific fields regularly take part in the training as guest lecturers.
